Before you make the decision to get a Border Collie, you should consider whether it’s the right choice for you and your family.
When deciding whether a Border Collie is the right match for you, you should consider your activity level. Border Collies are highly energetic and require a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation.
They thrive in active households and enjoy activities like running, hiking, and playing interactive games. If you lead an active lifestyle and are committed to providing daily exercise and mental stimulation, a Border Collie could be a good match.
You should also determine whether you are able to make the time commitment that caring for a Border Collie requires. Border Collies are intelligent and highly trainable but require consistent training and socialisation from an early age.
At least an hour or two a day – whether it's running, hiking, walking or playing fetch. Just keep in mind that they live to please, so they need plenty of positive reinforcement with pats and treats.
The average Border Collie can reach up to 60 cm in height and weigh between 13 to 19 kg. Females are generally smaller, while males can weigh as much as 25 kg!
Border Collies can generally get along well with other pets, but it largely depends on their individual temperament, socialisation, and the specific dynamics of the household. Border Collies are known for their intelligence and high energy levels, which can sometimes lead to herding instincts being triggered.
Border Collies shed moderately throughout the year, with heavier shedding occurring during seasonal coat changes.
Regular grooming can help manage the shedding and keep your Border Collie’s coat in good condition. Brushing your dog’s coat at least once or twice a week helps remove loose hair and prevent mats or tangles.
Hypoallergenic dogs are those that are less likely to trigger allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to pet dander. Unfortunately, Border Collies aren’t hypoallergenic. They shed a moderate amount throughout the year, and fur dander can spread quickly and trigger allergies.
Since Border Collies are highly intelligent, they also pick up new things quickly. With a positive reinforcement approach, you should be able to teach your Border Collie plenty of new skills.
Male puppies require more direct communication so they understand what you are explicitly asking. Think of it like how high school boys need you to tell them exactly what you want or don't want; mixed messages only create confusion for both sides. Female puppies tend to be gentler when it comes to training and instinctively pick up on things without needing explicit instructions. There are always exceptions to the rule, and we have female pups that act more like males and males that behave a bit more like females. For this reason, temperament testing is extremely important! I will always provide you with my honest thoughts on a pup for your specific family situation.
Border collies aren't too high maintenance, you should brush your Border Collie every 1-2 days to remove any loose fur. Especially behind the ears where the fur is finer and more prone to knots.
Feeding your Border Collie nutritious food in the right amount is key to keeping them healthy. Generally, the more protein in your Border Collie's diet, the better. Protein supports healthy development and is particularly essential for high-energy breeds like Border Collies. All of our puppies go home with a bag of PRO PLAN Puppy food that they have been eating since the day they were introduced to solids. Whether you choose to stick with this brand of food or change to something else, I strongly suggest you do your research on the food you plan to feed them. Not all dog foods are suitable for Border Collies.
