This starts just 3 days after being born with Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). This series of exercises is practiced until the puppy is 14 days old. ENS is believed to impact the neurological system by kicking it into action earlier than would be normally expected, resulting in an increased capacity that later will help make the difference in the dog's overall performance.
This is followed by our Early Puppy Development which involves problem-solving exercises. I begin with a lightweight cardboard tube that moves when the puppy touches it. As they grow older, I increase the difficulty of the exercises. After the cardboard tube, I introduce a heavier tube that doesn't move. Next, I create an 8-inch-wide surface using rubber backing (the kind that goes under rugs to hold them in place). The puppies learn quickly through these exercises.
By 3 weeks old, these problem-solving exercises become too easy for the puppies. Their eyes have opened and they are interacting with their littermates. We provide them with interactive baby toys. that move when touched and make sounds. They are introduced to different textures and surfaces and the puppies begin to have more experiences outside the whelping box.
These exercises are not meant to stress the puppies. They are designed to provide enrichment and encourage them to think and experience. Enrichment offers a much wider range of experiences than simply sitting in a whelping box doing nothing other than eating and sleeping.
At 6-7 weeks old, I start taking them out of the house for short walks on a leash individually. I also begin the early introduction to commands such as "down," "wait," and "stay." Also crate training, in the home, outside and in the car.
I make sure to provide early puppy development stimulation to help your dogs reach their fullest potential.
At 7 weeks - (49 days) old We conduct the Puppy Aptitude Test, or PAT.
PAT uses a scoring system from 1-6 and consists of ten tests. We take our puppies through 10 tests, record the process, create a scorecard for each puppy to better understand what we observe, and send them to each family on our waitlist for the specific litter we tested. This empowers our puppy families to understand their new puppy and start training and socializing it effectively once it goes home.
It is amazing to be able to give our puppies a voice through temperament testing and provide our puppy families with the ability to choose a puppy that has a temperament suitable for their lifestyle. This also ensures that the puppy is fulfilled by its person's lifestyle. The entire purpose is to select the right puppy for the right home, and we believe that this is the best way to do it.
We intentionally maintain a small-scale breeding program to ensure that each puppy receives the care and attention they deserve. By raising our puppies in our home, they grow up surrounded by our children and experience the lively atmosphere of family life. This nurturing environment fosters their social skills and helps them develop into well-adjusted, friendly companions. We believe that this hands-on approach leads to healthier and happier puppies, and we invite you to trust our commitment to quality and care in every step of their upbringing!
Dogs give us so much love in ways we barely notice at first. It's not always in the obvious tail wag or the excited greeting. It's in the way they sit close when you're deep in your thoughts.
Ever since watching the movie Babe when I was a little girl, I dreamed of having a Border Collie. The long walks in nature, playing fetch, teaching them tricks and having a doting companion. Their intelligence, loyalty, and beauty captivated me.
During my high school work experience term, I chose to work in a kennel. The owners had about 20 beautiful Huskies, and I learned everything about running a dog kennel, from grooming and feeding to exercise and cleaning the runs. I loved the experience, and I believe this is where my passion for working with dogs began.
Not long after moving to Pine Tree Hill Farms, my partner and I decided it was the perfect time to get a dog. Soon after, we welcomed our first Border Collie, Sadie (pictured), into our family. Sadie is not only a stunning dog, but she is also incredibly intelligent, has a wonderfully calm temperament, and is very intuitive. She is the reason, later on, that we decided we wanted to breed Border Collies. We firmly believe that every family should have the chance to add such an amazing canine companion to their home.
With the vision of creating phenomenal companions, we embarked on a journey to learn everything we could to build an exceptional breeding program focused on health and temperament, ensuring that each of our buyers has peace of mind when taking their Border Collie home.
As dog breeders, it is so important that you honour your dogs and stand behind each puppy you create. Here at Pine Tree Hill Farms we are proud of each of our Border Collies and can't wait to add you to our Pine Tree Hill Farms family!

When you adopt a Border Collie puppy, you're also adopting the lifestyle that comes with them...
Border Collies are not small-space friendly. So generally, they’re not compatible with apartment living – especially because of their need to always be doing something. And if there’s nothing to do? Furniture, shoes and house plants may pay the price.
Wide, open spaces are a Collie’s dream come true.
So a farm, countryside or property where there's room to run is their idea of paradise. Border Collies are most suited to pet parents who have the time to train, walk and play with them – every day. They especially appreciate routine, and prefer these activities to happen at a similar time each day.
Border Collies make wonderful pets for active singles and families. They have a spunky personality and love to be active with kids and parents. Border Collies also make good teammates for games of Frisbee, hiking, and agility competitions. Border Collies are often cited as the smartest dog breed!
